Allied Health Professionals often referred to as AHP’s, provide treatment, support and rehabilitation for children to adults that are ill, have special needs requirements or disabilities. They work towards helping the individual to live their live as fully as possible. You will find AHP’s throughout the different health and care settings across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, these include: the community, people’s homes, school, hospices and within the hospitals. There are 14 AHP roles and these are: Art therapist, Chiropodist / Podiatrist, Dietitian, Drama therapist, Music Therapist, Occupational Therapist (OT), Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), Orthoptist, Osteopath, Paramedic, Physiotherapist (Physio), Radiographer (Diagnostic & Therapeutic), Orthotist / Prosthetist and Speech and Language Therapist. Through working through this module you will have an insight into these roles and more.

Art therapist
Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art to improve people’s mental health and quality of life. Art is used to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing.
They work within multi-disciplinary teams within the NHS, schools, community, care and many other places.
Chiropodists / Podiatrist
As a Chiropodists / Podiatrist we treat and care for people of all ages whose feet and legs have been affected by injury or illness. A podiatrist will diagnose and treat abnormalities and offer professional advice on care of feet and legs to prevent foot problems.
Dietitian
As a dietitian we translate the science of nutrition into everyday information about food and advise people on their food and nutrition choices. We work to promote good health and prevent disease in individuals as well as in communities.
Drama therapists
Drama therapy uses role play, voice work, movement and storytelling to help clients explore and solve personal and social problems. Sessions maybe delivered one-to-one or in a group environment in person or online.
Music Therapists
Music therapists are psychological clinicals that use the power of music to help people deal with feelings they cannot put into words. They work across all ages with both groups and individuals.
Operating Department Practitioners
Operating department practitioners work with patients of all ages and are involved in each phase of a person’s operation. They work alongside anesthetists, surgeons, and the nursing team.
Occupational Therapist
As an occupational therapist you will work people who have difficulties carrying out day-to-day ordinary activities because of a disability, illness, trauma, ageing, and a range of long-term conditions.
Paramedic
As a paramedic, you will often be one of the first to arrive when a patient needs help. It’s a fast-paced and vital role where you’ll need to quickly take charge of the situation to save lives. Paramedics provide care for people from birth to death.
Physiotherapists
Physiotherapists work with people of all ages, helping to improve their mobility and regain their independence after an injury or operation, or as a result of ageing or a disability. As well as treating people, you promote good health and advise people on how to avoid injury.
Prosthetist / Orthotist
Prosthetist/orthotist: Transform the lives of your patients by helping them to run, walk better or simply stand without pain. Prosthetists and orthotists give back the power of movement to their patients, in a way that’s as pain-free as possible and use the latest technology to create and fit prostheses or aids.
Orthoptist
An orthoptist specialises in diagnosing and managing eye conditions. They help improve the quality of people’s lives by treating eye disorders and spotting serious neurological conditions.
Speech and Language Therapist
Speech and language therapists provide life-changing treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing. They help people who, for physical or psychological reasons, have problems speaking and communicating. Patients range from children whose speech is slow to develop, to older people whose ability to speak has been impaired by illness or injury. It also includes treatment for those who have difficulty with eating or swallowing.
Radiographer: Therapeutic and Diagnostic
Radiography is one of the most innovative aspects of healthcare. Diagnostic radiographers use advanced technology to look inside patients’ bodies and understand the root causes of their illness, and consult with colleagues on diagnosis and treatment plans.
Therapeutic radiographer you will use radiotherapy to treat medical conditions such as cancer and tumors. You will do this by collaborating with other healthcare professionals to create individual treatment plans that blend technical expertise with emotional support for your patients.
Osteopath
Osteopaths have expertise in the musculoskeletal system and its relationship to other systems of the body in the promotion of good health and provide a package of care. They use a varied range of interventions specific to each patient including manual therapy techniques, physical therapy (rehabilitation and exercise prescription), health advice and self-management guidance.
